Working fire in Buffalo Grove, 1-5-20
Late Sunday evening (January 5, 2020), the Buffalo Grove Fire Department received an emergency call regarding a potential fire at the Dengeos Restaurant located at 195 W. Dundee Road. As responding police officers arrived, they noticed visible smoke billowing from the building, drifting across the road. Firefighters soon identified flames licking the trim on the C-D corner of the structure, with smoke visibly permeating the interior. In response to the escalating situation, the incident command upgraded the status to a Code 4, calling in additional resources.
On-scene units included Buffalo Grove’s Quint 25, Engine 26, Engine 27, Ambulance 25, Ambulance 26, Battalion 4, Car 208, and the deputy chief. Mutual aid support was provided by neighboring departments such as Arlington Heights Engine 4, Ambulance 4, and Battalion 1; Long Grove Squad 55 and Battalion 55; Palatine Engine 82 and Ambulance 82; Lincolnshire-Riverwoods FPD Squad 51, Prospect Heights Engine 39, and ambulances from Lake Forest and the Nunda Rural FPD.
The firefighters faced a challenging scenario as they worked diligently to contain the blaze. They strategically vented the roof and removed sections of the building's siding to reveal significant charring along the corner of the structure. Images captured by Larry Shapiro depict the intense efforts of firefighters using saws and other tools to manage the situation effectively. One photograph shows a firefighter wielding a saw at the scene, while another highlights the teamwork involved in cutting into the roof for ventilation purposes.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation, but early reports suggest it may have been triggered by a discarded cigarette. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of proper disposal of smoking materials to prevent catastrophic events like this one. Despite the severity of the situation, the coordinated efforts of multiple agencies ensured that the fire was brought under control, minimizing potential damage and protecting lives.
As residents and business owners in the area continue to assess the impact, gratitude is expressed to all first responders who bravely tackled the blaze. Their swift actions undoubtedly prevented further destruction and highlighted the critical role of regional cooperation in managing emergencies.
